Agriturismo in South Tyrol: Experience Authentic Farm Life at Zwiglhof
Experience tradition, savor origin.
Agriturismo in South Tyrol is the harmonious blend of centuries-old tradition, active farming, and the warm hospitality that makes Zwiglhof so special. At Zwiglhof, Agriturismo embodies our daily passion for nature, our animals, and the preservation of a culture we wish to share with you.
True Agriturismo begins where conventional tourism ends: with a deep understanding of the origin of our food and the rhythm of the seasons. Agritourism is our living promise to open up the honest and high-quality world of our South Tyrolean organic farming to you. Welcome to the world of authentic rural life.
What does Agriturismo mean?
The term Agriturismo (or Agritourism) is composed of the Italian words “agricoltura” (agriculture) and “turismo” (tourism).
Originally established to halt rural depopulation and support small agricultural businesses, it has evolved into one of the most authentic forms of travel. In Italy, Agriturismo is a protected term. Clear guidelines for this were set by the Italian government in 1985.
Agriturismo vs. Farm Holiday?
While a traditional farm holiday often focuses on experiences for families and children, Agriturismo goes a step further: it prioritizes hospitality, agricultural production, and the preservation of rural culture.
It's about not just seeing, but tasting and understanding the origin of our food. Agriturismo describes a form of holiday where agriculture is not just the backdrop, but the beating heart of your stay.
Agriturismo Zwiglhof: Where Tradition Meets Indulgence
As diverse as Italy itself, so too is Agriturismo – the journey extends from the fragrant lemon groves of Sicily, the ancient, silvery shimmering olive groves of Puglia, and the iconic vineyards of Tuscany, to finally the honest, Bioland-certified mountain farming here with us at Zwiglhof.
Honest Work, Exquisite Indulgence.
Agriturismo at Zwiglhof is the answer for all who seek authentic South Tyrol without compromising on refined indulgence. While a classic farm holiday often stops at merely 'being there,' our understanding of agritourism truly begins with 'understanding and enjoying.'
At Zwiglhof, agritourism reveals itself in its most alpine form, where alpine tradition and Mediterranean hospitality merge into something truly special, and the rugged, honest work on the mountain blends with a refined sense of aesthetics and culinary delight.
Rustic Heritage, Modern Comfort.
For us, farming is not a guest hobby, but our livelihood as a Bioland-certified farm. You won't experience a staged farm world, but the authentic rhythm of the seasons. We invite you behind the scenes, blending the rustic heritage of a mountain farm with the comfort of modern architecture.
After a day in the stable or on the peaks of the Dolomites, your luxurious suite awaits you. It's an invitation to rediscover your origins – ingeniously simple and simply ingenious.
Key Characteristics of an Agriturismo: How We Live It at Zwiglhof
What distinguishes a genuine Agriturismo in South Tyrol from a conventional hotel and a farm holiday? In Italy – and particularly strictly in South Tyrol – this term is legally protected and subject to clear conditions. Every Agriturismo in South Tyrol is regularly inspected. Only establishments that demonstrably operate an active farm are permitted to use this designation. For you, this provides the assurance that your farm holiday is not just a promise, but a certified piece of authentic home.
To give you an even clearer picture of what awaits you during a stay at a genuine Italian Agriturismo, we have summarized the most important characteristics.
Active Agricultural Operation & Authentic Farm Life
An Agriturismo is not a hotel with 'farm decor'. Agriculture must always be the primary operation; guest accommodation is a valuable secondary income.
At Zwiglhof, Bioland farming is our foundation – we are farmers by passion, and you'll feel that in every conversation and every task.
Our Own Products, Culinary Delights & Farm Shop
The heart of our philosophy is the refinement of our produce. Whether at breakfast or dinner: you'll savor what grows in our meadows, garden, and stables – from meat sourced from stress-free slaughter to fresh eggs, fruits, and vegetables.
In our farm shop, you'll also find these treasures as homemade fruit spreads or savory specialties to take home.
A Rural Setting Steeped in History: Centuries of Tradition
Typical for an Agriturismo is its location amidst nature. Zwiglhof is situated at 1,450 meters, nestled in the mountain meadows of the Hochpustertal with views of the Sesto Dolomites.
You'll reside in an environment that has evolved over centuries, far from through traffic, yet close to authentic life.
Amenities & Diversity: „Brilliantly Simple – Simply Brilliant“
The spectrum of agritourism ranges from simple hospitality to exclusive accommodations. We have chosen the path of „high-quality simplicity.“
Our suites offer you modern comfort and the scent of Swiss pine, while preserving the rustic character of our mountain farm.
Two Farms, One Family: Our Shared Vision
For us, Agriturismo is above all one thing: a matter of the heart. Only 400 meters separate Zwiglhof from Glinzhof, but much more than just proximity connects us. Angelika from Zwiglhof and Manfred from Glinzhof are siblings – we share not only our childhood memories but also a passion for agriculture and a centuries-old tradition.
One Table, Two Farms: Shared Delights in the Bergstube
You'll feel this close connection with us every step of the way. We work hand in hand, support each other with haymaking, and exchange valuable experiences. This unity is particularly evident during shared dinners in our cozy Bergstube.
Here, guests from Zwiglhof and Glinzhof gather at one table to end the day together. The table is laden with the best produce from both our farms – refined into honest dishes that taste of home.
United Strength: Agriturismo as a Family Affair
Here, you will experience the combined strength and authenticity of two farms that share a common philosophy. When we speak of agritourism, we mean precisely this familial community that prioritizes the origin of our products and the love for our homeland.
This cohesion is the foundation of our daily work. It is the certainty that the quality on your plate is the result of genuine solidarity and shared values – a connection that extends far beyond the fence of a single farm.
Farm Life & Animals: Fully Immersed, Not Just Observing
At Zwiglhof, agriculture is our daily life. As a Bioland farm, we align ourselves with the rhythm of nature and the well-being of our animals. We, Angelika and Michael, invite you to experience this authentic daily life up close.
Animal Encounters at Zwiglhof
Our animals are an integral part of our farm's ecosystem:
- Our Cattle: We practice suckler cow husbandry. At Zwiglhof, we raise approximately 20 young calves each year with ample space and free-range access – just as it should be for an authentic Bioland farm.
- Horses & Small Animals: Our Haflinger mare and pony enjoy the freedom of the mountain, while the cats and rabbits, with their offspring, await discovery. Amidst it all, our farm dog ensures everything is in order.
- Our Poultry: Our roosters guard their hens in the coop – and you are welcome to collect your breakfast egg directly from them for a perfect start to your day.
Authentic Craftsmanship, Experienced Up Close
With us, contact with the animals is direct and honest – without artificial barriers between guest and daily farm life. If you wish, feel free to observe us or even lend a hand yourself.
Whether during daily stable work or hay harvesting on our mountain meadows: we will show you what it truly means to farm in harmony with nature.
It is the valuable experience of not just seeing the origin of your food, but understanding the journey from stable to plate with all your senses, and rediscovering an appreciation for our land.
Respect You Can Taste: Supreme Meat Quality Through Absolute Stress-Free Living
One feature that truly makes our agriturismo at Zwiglhof exceptional is how we handle the end of our animals' lives. EU law typically mandates that slaughter animals must be transported alive to the abattoir – a journey often associated with significant stress for the animals.
Because the well-being of our cattle is paramount to us until their very last moment, Michael and Manfred extensively sought an alternative. In Austria, they found the solution: a specially designed slaughter box.
The Most Stress-Free Method Available
Following the detailed specifications of the local veterinary office, we had such a box built. What makes it special: The animals are allowed to die in their familiar surroundings on the farm.
At the moment they are engaged in their favorite activity – eating concentrated feed – their passing occurs completely relaxed and without any moments of fear.
This process is subject to the strictest guidelines and constant controls, but for us, it is the only way that truly honors our appreciation for the animal.
Quality You Can Simply Taste
This unconditional freedom from stress is not only an ethical decision but also the secret to our meat quality. We process the meat obtained in this way into our farm-made Kaminwurzen and salami for your breakfast.
Furthermore, it forms the high-quality basis for our meat dishes during shared dinners in the Bergstube.
For you, this means: Enjoyment with a clear conscience – from its origin to your plate.
Agriturismo at Zwiglhof – More Than Just a Holiday
When you choose to holiday with us at Zwiglhof, you're opting for a retreat that goes deeper. You exchange the noise of everyday life for the ringing of cowbells and the anonymity of a hotel for the warm community of our family.
For us, authentic agriturismo in South Tyrol means opening the doors to our lives and showing you how precious and delicious nature is when treated with respect.
Whether during a shared dinner in the Bergstube, while petting the animals, or with the first bite of a farm-produced organic product: You will feel that it is ingeniously simple and simply ingenious to return to the source.
We look forward to sharing this piece of home with you.
Your hosts, Angelika and Michael with Leo and Sophie
